Waste Cone – Section 4.20.5

A method of detecting flow is required when a pressure relief valve is installed in a closed loop system. A sight glass in a cone downstream of the fire pump provides a way to observe water discharge. In practice, the sight glass become distorted to the point at which the flow can no longer be observed, it can be replaced without having to remove the waste cone. The relief valve shall discharge into an open pipe or into a cone or funnel secured to the outlet of the valve. Water discharge from the relief valve shall be readily visible or easily detectable by the pump operator. If a closed-type cone is used, it shall be provided with means for detecting motion of water through the cone.
