Check Valve – Section 4.17.7
The check valve in the discharge piping restricts the pressure downstream of the fire pump and keeps the pressurized liquid from going back through the fire pump. Backflow through a fire pump can spin the fire pump in reverse, causing damage. Pressure surges can develop and oscillate when the pump starts or stops or when a significant change in the flow rate occurs.
The Check Valve or back flow preventer is necessary to prevent water from flowing back into the fire pump. Backflow on pump shutdown can be a source of pressure surges. Spring-loaded, anti-slam check valves reduce pressure surges by minimizing backflow.
4.17.7* A listed check valve or backflow preventer shall be installed in the pump discharge assembly.
